As children, many people think about what they want to be when they grow up. Maybe they wanted to be a princess or the president; while some people may want to become zoologists. Zoologists work with animals as they conduct experiments, research, and observations. Traveling is an important part of a zoologist's job. They can travel to search for animals that are not found in the area. Becoming a zoologist requires working with animals, doing research, and traveling. A zoologist is likely to study animals in a controlled or natural environment or dissect dead animals for study ("Zoologists"...Campus par.8). Conducting experiments indoors or outdoors and on animals is part of the job (“Zoologists”...Campus par.6). They must observe and study the characteristics and behaviors of animals and wildlife (“Zoologists”...US par.2). Data on the life processes, diseases, genetics and origins of animals are analyzed after they have been collected (“Zoologo” par.1). Zoologists expand their knowledge of fundamental life processes by carrying out research (“Zoologists”...Campus par.2). Basic and applied are the two main categories of research; basic research helps people understand the problem and tries to solve a certain problem (“Zoologists”...Campus par.2). Creating new tests, treatments, drugs, biofuels and increasing crop yields using knowledge from basic research is the work of a zoologist in applied research (“Zoologists”...Campus par.5). In applied research, zoologists will be expected to collaborate with other scientists, business executives, technicians, engineers and other zoologists (“Zoologists”...Campus par.5). However, zoologists who only use basic research tend to have a job in a lab, government/private sector, or… half the job… able to observe them. Many zoologists will travel to see animals in their natural environment. Zoologists do research, work with animals, and work to save the environment as part of their job.
