An article by Anna Jo Bratton, Associated Press, describes well the dangers of my topic: piracy. In the article, Bratton reported on a recent legal issue impacting University of Nebraska-Lincoln sophomore Sarah Barg and her colleges. The RIAA, an anti-piracy and anti-plagiarism society, suspected that many students at the university were illegally downloading multimedia content. Burg received an email regarding the matter, but was ignorant and considered it a fluke or a scam. The email suggested that he had allegedly downloaded as many as 381 songs. The letter continued to say that a lawsuit was possible, but here they offered the opportunity to avoid that circumstance. They asked her for $3,000, or $7.87 per song. Sarah, still a little in disbelief, called Student Legal Services and discovered that the email was legitimate and that she had a costly decision to make. Burg along with 61 other students at the university were fined significantly due to the misconception of the consequences of media piracy. Plagiarism is one of the most flourishing crimes in America. Plagiarism, according to Webster's Dictionary, is “taking ideas, writings, etc. from another and pass them off as one's own” (p. 203). There are two main issues in plagiarism: the act itself and the motivation (IThenticate). The act itself is sin. The Bible states in Leviticus 19:11, “Thou shalt not steal; you will not act falsely; you shall not lie to one another” (OpenBible). He states bluntly that stealing is wrong. Even if a person does not look at it from a biblical perspective, even the authority of the law states that stealing is a crime. Whatever worldview you base your morals on, the authority of the physical world has ruled out every possibility... middle of paper......action: procrastination drives a person to desperation and panic, many people shirk I work on the web.5. Ignorance: People are not aware that they are plagiarists. A survey conducted at Long Island University found that students don't feel as if they weren't given the necessary information about plagiarism in high school. The survey results are as follows:Romans 12:5-8New International Version (NIV)So in Christ we, though many, are one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophecy, then prophesy according to your faith; 7 if necessary, serve; if he is teaching, then he teaches; 8 if it is to encourage, then encourage; if he is giving, then give generously; if it involves driving,[b] do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
