Stereotypes can be good, but they can also be bad. In our society, everyone is placed in some form of group, whether good or bad. It is better to ignore the stereotypes and inferiority that is imposed on people because the stereotypes are not true, by ignoring them people are able to not let it bother them and it helps to maintain peace in the society. Whether good or bad, people should not label others because everyone is a person. No one is better or worse than the other. The stereotypes are not true. Most of the time people are stereotyped based on false information. According to Dr. Joseph A. Bailey II, MD. He states that "stereotypes are superficial, impulsive, and false symbols of beliefs about an entire group of people whose individual differences are ignored." Dr. Bailey is right, people assume that just because one person has something wrong, then the next person they see has something wrong with them, they automatically assume they are the same, so they get put in the same group. This is not true, one person may be missing an arm and another person may have trouble walking. Just because they both have something wrong doesn't mean they can be placed in the same group. Just because one person is worse off than the other doesn't mean they are all like that. In Writing on the River there was the story of a woman who had MS, multiple sclerosis, but could do things that others with MS could not do: “I can write in cursive and, in an emergency, take a bath to a cat soaked in oil. I play Scrabble” (Nancy Mairs Page 105). Nancy Mairs is a perfect example of how there can be multiple people with the same problem but all different. Therefore stereotypes are not true, they are simply based on a person's thoughts. By ignoring the ster...... middle of paper ...... the tube that chooses to ignore the stereotypes and not let them bother them, you carry on with a life as if nothing could ever stop them, which in return helps to protect many people. Bottom line, there is no way on this planet that all stereotypes will disappear. So the best thing that can be done is to simply try our best to keep the peace, ignore them and understand that they are based on someone's false understanding and that they are not true. Just as Mrs. Hurston and Mrs. Mairs did, they chose to be and do what they wanted and not let the words others said bother them. Mrs Mairs knew there wasn't much she could do, she couldn't change the fact that she had MS, but she decided to get on with life as best she could and enjoy what she had. This is what everyone should do. Everyone should be who they want to be and live life to the fullest.
