Topic > David Foster Wallace Speech Analysis - 760

David Foster Wallace was a graduate of Amherst College and gave a unique and inspiring commencement speech at Kenyon College in 2005. In his speech, Wallace talks about his perspective on the value of a liberal arts education approach. In his speech, Wallace warns his audience that life is full of daily routine, dull-eyed employees, empty phrases, and annoyance, which he then explains, can drive a person crazy or simply make him selfish. Wallace emphasizes how practically important it is to pay attention to the needs of others. It also explains how the daily choices we make will have a constant impact on our lives, whether negative or positive. Through a unique approach, Wallace sends an extremely informative message to his audience. He explains that what we love is at the heart of “This is Water.” In stating this, Wallace is not referring to religion but goes on to say that the religion we choose to worship is a conscious devotion. What we are interested in is what essentially governs how we live our lives, as Wallace says, it is also unconscious. In other words, he is implying that people often fail to recognize the needs of others because they are too focused on themselves. Wallace then explains how a person can not only change himself, but also the community around him, simply by choosing how and what. think when put in a certain situation. It also provides a description of the average daily routine of an adult. Wallace delves into repetition and the same stale setbacks that life throws at you. Being stressed about things like work or relationships often leads people to think that they are the center of the universe and that the world revolves around them. When we focus only on ourselves, we forge…half of the paper…we have demonstrated how people would feel if someone else took their anger out on them. People should not only think about themselves but also about others. Everyone around us is as important as us. In conclusion, when people choose to start paying more attention, they will be able to make choices that will improve the quality of their lives and that of others around them. Having awareness and not simply getting frustrated with people can help a person think about the lives of others. I found Wallace's speech relatable not only to me, but also to others because it is a lesson that society can benefit from. Paying attention to the obvious can help a person realize all the amazing opportunities that are presented right in front of them. We all simply have to “keep reminding ourselves again and again, 'This is water, this is water'” (Wallace 209).
