Carol Ann Duffy's "Pilates Wife" raises important moral questions about the institution of marriage, the most important question being how love and desire can vanish in marriage. Pilate's wife no longer desires Pilate and this can be seen in many other poems in "The World Wife". Duffy uses a lot of imagery in this poem and the most important image has to do with hands, “First, his hands are a woman's, softer than mine”. Duffy uses the softness of a woman's hand as an insult to Pilate, he is not only insulting Pilate's hands, but his personality and giving the impression that Pilate does not work. Duffy uses long vowels in the portrait of his hands, “Pearly nails”, “Field”, “Pale ” to emphasize his lazy and indolent nature. Duffy uses a one-word phrase at the end of the first stanza, “Pontius”, to highlight Pilate's wife's dislike towards him, the sound is short and abrupt and could be mistaken for "leap". This immediately shows the hatred that Pilate's wife has towards her husband, describing his soft and clean hands is a sign that he doesn't work and after years of marriage, she is now just noticing that Pilate doesn't he is a hard-working man. "Pilate's Wife" is one of five poems in The World's Wife about a biblical character. The poem comes from a biblical story, Ponto Pilate was the Roman governor of Judea. although he did not think Jesus was guilty of any crime, he allowed him to be crucified. When the Nazarene came to Jerusalem, Pilate's wife was unhappy alone, her husband did not pay attention to her, which left her with desires and impulses about other men, this is shown by the alliteration: “I longed for Rome, home, someone other". She immediately craves something new, someone new, ... middle of paper ... the energy of the bus and this leads him to lose everything he has, including his wife, "What touches me now is not idiocy." or greed, but lack of thought for me” this can also be seen in “Pilate's Wife” as with 'Mrs Sisyphus' their marriage is not working because Mrs Sisyphus is dissatisfied, she complains about her husband's hard work because he doesn't he spends enough time with her this is in contrast to "Pilate's wife" because her husband doesn't work hard and still doesn't spend time with her leaving her dissatisfied. Duffy uses controlled lines and 6 stanzas, the controlled lines, the length of the stanzas and the rhythm of this poem suggests someone reflect on an event with emotional detachment, it gives the impression that Pilate's wife is reflecting on when she met Jesus for the first time and since that event his marriage has never been the same
