Topic > Women of Color in the Feminist Movement - 1527

Because gender is only one of many other socially constructed categories of difference and inequality, it is of the utmost importance for social scientists to look at the factors that help shape gender. Gender as a whole cannot be studied without observing the social context in which it is situated: variations in meaning and interaction are manifestations when placed in a more specific context, revealing the reality of privilege, power and prestige (57) . There are also environmental factors to consider, such as individual, interactional and institutional ones. These complex but imperatively interconnected factors have meaning in how the construct of gender operates, without other social identifiers, gender alone is too general a topic to be inclusive without demeaning other diverse groups. One of the most notable is how race and gender interact in social spheres. To clearly understand why studying the difference in how women of color are affected by their status, one must first understand the word “white privilege.” Privilege itself is synonymous with white skin color, being male, masculine, wealthy, heterosexual, young, able-bodied, and so on (58). White privilege can be difficult to observe from the perspective of the individual who inherently possesses it. For white women in the women's rights movement, their privilege puts them at the forefront of an important social movement that represents a default for all women and their issues. Of course, not all women are white and not all women have the same specific problems and interests as white women. This presents another example of hierarchy: even within social movements there are hierarchies and for much of the history of the women's rights movement, white women… at the center of the paper… ture of entire societies who are legitimized and maintained in all social groups. One criticism of this method is that it has the potential to downplay gender as an “ever-changing quilt of life experiences,” resulting in a diminished sense of social agency. We therefore need to find a way to connect gender to various identifiers and circumstances, extending it to other groups of people as well. Doing this is an entirely different process involving a mix of quantitative and qualitative data regarding how the researcher is attempting to use the findings. The purpose of social experience is not just based on social variables and identifiers, but on the perspective of those variables. Women of color have opened their minds more on the topic of gender and sex, allowing the social movement to have more validity as it reaches out to others without certain privileges.
