The police found Hana's naked and starving body wrapped in a sheet in her adoptive parents' backyard. They had denied her food, locked her in a closet, forced her to sleep in a stable. She had been repeatedly hit with a 15-inch plastic pipe before she died (Christianity). Child abuse, also called child cruelty, was once seen as a minor social problem affecting only a handful of U.S. children. With increased public and professional awareness has come a sharp increase in the number of reported cases. Child abuse among parents is on the rise due to increased stress, emotional and monetary strain. The rise of child abuse has increased across the world. Abuse is getting worse and more and more children are being abused every day. Melissa J. Doak states in "Causes and Effects of Child Abuse" that 1.5% of the country's children were confirmed victims of abuse in 1996. 77% of the parents were the perpetrators of the abuse. 11% say that relatives were the perpetrators of the abuse. More than 1,000 children in the United States die from abuse. 40 million children aged 14 and under suffer from abuse and neglect” (Causa). Neglect is the failure to meet a child's basic needs. This can take many forms. Experts say: “The main negligence is physical negligence. Parents fail to provide adequate food, clothing, shelter, or supervision. In 1996, neglect was found in 52% of confirmed abuse cases” (Causa). Another form of abandonment is emotional abandonment. This is a failure to meet a child's normal emotional needs, or behavior that harms a child's normal emotional and psychological development (such as allowing drug abuse in the home). Without emotional needs, the child may have difficulty growing up not knowing love or emotions towards people. Who...... middle of paper ......, emotional and monetary problems. Parents never mean to hurt their children. When they face these problems they have a tendency to take their anger out on themselves.
