Woodstock was a music festival produced by Artie Kornfeld, Michael Lang, John Roberts and Joel Rosenman. Woodstock was held on a farm in Bethel, New York, starting on August 15, 1969 and lasting until August 18. (The Woodstock Festivals) The producers' original goal was to raise money and promote the opening of their own music studio and raise money for the development of a rock and roll resort. (The Woodstock) Producers promoted the event as "Three Days of Peace, Love and Rock n' Roll." (The Woodstock) Over 400,000 people attended the event. (The Woodstock) This article will briefly discuss some of the artists, symbolism, and legacy of Woodstock. Woodstock symbolized many things to the entertainers and attendees of Woodstock. The year leading up to Woodstock was a very difficult year for the United States. There were many protests and struggles regarding the Vietnam War, the assassination of the Martian Luther King Junior, women's rights, and gay and lesbian rights. (Doyle) The festival represented the meeting of the younger generation (baby boomers). Woodstock symbolized mutual acceptance and the goal of peace, both regarding war and at home. Janis Joplin was one of the performers at Woodstock. She was born on January 19, 1943 in Texas. (Janis) She had difficulty fitting in at school once she became a teenager. She was teased and bullied, which led to her rebellion. Janis loved music from a young age and enjoyed singing in her church choir. As he developed his musical taste, he gravitated toward blues and jazz.
