This document will summarize the roles and responsibilities of a behavioral health counselor and provide current models of well-being and resilience. Behavioral health counselors must be able to function in a consistently paced primary care setting. Wellbeing and Resilience Model When working with diverse populations, it is critical that counselors consider the whole person and be sensitive to cultural norms when providing treatment services (“The Role,” n.d.). This process can create confusion for clients and counselors providing structure to the nature and purpose of counseling During the evaluation phase of treatment, counselors distinguish the presenting problem, nature, severity, and duration of use (Gladding and Newsome, 2013). In addition to evaluating the level of preparation and motivation to change and be aware of the tasks and intervention strategies on each developmental level with age, gender, cultural background, psychosocial stressors, and level of functioning. For example, resistant consumers who are court-ordered to undergo a treatment can improve or decrease physically, psychologically and emotionally based on the physical settings. Some methods used by counselors may be anticipating, accepting, and strengthening the relationship, using persuasion, or addressing the situation with resistant clients depending on the counselor's training (Gladding and Newsome, 2013). It is important that counselors provide the most effective treatment, especially interventions and techniques, through empirical evidence of the effectiveness of counseling. It is the consultants' responsibility to integrate research and practice of the selected intervention that coincides with the standards of care.
