Topic > The effects of bullying in life and in The Lord of the Rings

In the story The Lord of the Flies, the effects of bullying are represented by the character Piggy; However, there are similarities, as well as differences, in modern bullying. Bullying has been going on for decades now. In the novel Lord of the Flies, Piggy is bullied by another boy stranded on the island named Jack. Studies show that bullying today has “gained notoriety as a type of behavior, becoming increasingly common” (Wayne). The bullying that Piggy encounters and the bully that Jack describes in Lord of the Flies is very similar to the bullying and types of bullying that kids face today. However, some may not understand how bullying can be dangerous and extremely painful, not only physically, but mentally; it is best to adequately explain that bullying is actually defined as “intentional aggressive behavior characterized by an imbalance of strength or power” (Fields). KidsHealth, in 2004, with the help of children revealing they were one of these bullies, provided a survey that showed that "40% of children between the ages of nine and thirteen are one of these bullies" (Turley) . only the children who had the courage to confess that they were bullies and/or still are. “While awareness of bullying has undeniably increased, placing bullying in such a broad network, redefining it as an epidemic” (Wayne). In today's society bullying has subsided and, better known as an "epidemic", most people tend to laugh at bullying instead of seeing it as hurtful. Bullying is not only known as an epidemic but also deadly.
