In March 1768, Tecumseh was born in what is now Ohio. Tecumseh's name means "Panther in the Sky." Tecumseh was the fifth born in his family. His mother, Methotaske, was a Creek, and his father, Puckeshinewa, was a Shawnee. He excelled in the game played by Indian boys. He also organized other boys to go hunting. When Tecumseh was younger he looked up to and admired warriors, like his older brother. He also tried to be like the warriors. Later in his life, Tecumseh became a powerful leader of the Native American tribe, the Shawnee. He didn't want the Americans to take Native American land. He accomplished many things in his life. As Tecumseh grew up, he began providing for those who couldn't put food on the table for their families, and he was also very helpful. He was known for the kindness and concern he showed for the members of his tribe.
