Devin WilliamsonMr. MullinsENGL 1213-0645, March 2014The Outdated System: The Electoral CollegeAs the United States of America ages, so does the presidential voting system. The argument for changing this method of voting is becoming more and more popular as the years go by. It has been said that the framers of the Constitution invented this method because of bad transportation and communications and feared that public intelligence was not suited to choosing the President of the United States. Others argue that the Framers adopted this method because they feared that the public was not receiving enough information about candidates outside their state to make such a decision based on the direct popular vote. My research into this controversial political issue will examine the factors why the Electoral College exists and whether it is perhaps obsolete for today's society. It will examine the pros and cons of this voting system and explore alternative methods of voting such as direct popular vote. Many academic authors have compiled research to demonstrate that this voting system is outdated and does not accurately represent the national popular will. Many US citizens value their vote because they only have one to cast for the candidate of their choice in the presidential election. Under the electoral college system their vote may not be represented. Because of today's society in the United States, the Electoral College should be abolished because there is no need to use an intermediary to choose our president. It's a vote of the people, we all have one voice, one vote. Boyd, William Jd "The Electoral College System Challenged." National Civic Review 55.9 (1966):...... half of the document ...... also talks about cases where the system failed to accurately represent the vote of the national popular will and goes into detail about each case. Obviously this article is anti-Electoral College and provides many points in support of anti-Electoral College supporters. In the conclusion of his article he mentions that this voting system has worked well over the years, but he believes it is not necessary because, for the reasons the electoral college was established, it is no longer a problem in today's world. So the voting system is obsolete. Using this article in my research regarding the Electoral College debate will strengthen my argument against the Electoral College. It will be useful because it will explain in depth every case in which the current voting system has failed to represent the national popular will..
