Social Judgment Theory (SJT), also known as social judgment involvement, are “messages and judgments that occur during the perception and evaluation of each new idea by comparing it with the current point of view and placing it on the attitude scale in the mind” (Griffin 2009, p.183). Social judgment theory can be evaluated based on three criteria: predictive power, explanatory power, and testability. Social judgment theory is an elegant conception of the persuasion process. Social judgment theory is a credible theory that can be predicted, explanatory, and tested. SJT is based on things you think that should or could have happened. This theory is how people judge the messages they receive. Individuals accept or reject the message they are given to see where the attitude outcome will fall on the latitude scale. There are three scales of latitude on which the idea can be evaluated: acceptance latitude, rejection latitude, and non-commitment latitude. “Latitude of acceptance are ideas that people consider reasonable or worthy of consideration. Rejection latitude is the opposite idea of acceptance latitude. They are ideas that people see as unreasonable or objectionable. Non-commitment latitudes are ideas that people see as neither acceptable nor objectionable” (Griffin 2009, p. 185). The latitude scale leads to persuasion in a two-step process. The first step is for individuals to listen to or read a message and understand where the message fits into their position. The second step requires individuals to adapt to a particular attitude towards or away from the message received. For example, Ned's view on flying, "flying is dangerous because fanatics are willing to die for their cause" (G...... middle of the sheet ...... of the graph where the sheriff's son's attitude on the latitude scale falls on the side of rejection which is safe In conclusion, SJT definitely assessed the three criteria: predictive power, explanatory power, and testability SJT was a reliable and credible theory that was predicted , explained and tested based on real life examples. This theory was a good theory that tested people's attitude towards things that are being thought about and things that are done physically. SJT shows how people judge the things in their minds and with sight SJT is used every day even if we don't recognize it or realize others are doing it Everyone will send a message that someone is being judged by a look or what happens in the mind. The latitude scale basically helps people understand where other people's attitudes lie when it comes to someone's opinion.
