The speech titled "A More Perfect Union" was delivered by Senator Barack Obama, a presidential candidate, on March 18, 2008. It was a response to the video clip of Barack Obama's former pastor, Reverend Jerimiah Wright, making racially charged comments against America. It was done so that the public would not condone the pastor's actions towards Barack Obama. Pundits and various new media played the footage repeatedly on television, YouTube, etc. This was degrading Obama's reputation and making it more difficult to run for president. He knew he had to appeal to American citizens and so he used Aristotle's Logos, Ethos, and Pathos, which are appeals to logic, ethics, and emotions respectively. He also uses rhetorical strategies. The myriad of both these aspects made this speech masterful and made the speech a turning point in the election. This speech was important to his campaign in many ways. When the video was released to the public, the specific phrases used by the news outlet gave the impression that Reverend Wright was discriminating against America. Since Obama was running for president in 2008, he needed majority approval. Since people who discriminate are usually at the extreme end, they could not be a target audience. So when news came out that the pastor was discriminating, people made connections to Obama. This bad publicity was making it much more difficult to become president. Then he gave the speech to show that the pastor's actions are in no way related to him. He decided to kill two birds with one stone by stopping the bad publicity and expressing his point of view on the issues of racial equality that arise with the reverend's actions. Obama sought to educate America... middle of paper... the march of those who came before us, a march for a more just, more equal, more free, more caring, more prosperous America. .” Logos likes this because it showed the reasons for the decadence of current society and gave a proposal to resolve it, a desire. The idea is simple. There are and were problems in America. Obama launched a solution, a cause, an effect. He effectively uses examples to emphasize his point. His explanation made a lot of sense to the audience because; he used myriad examples and references from his knowledge. This speech was a turning point in the election and for good reason. It inspires us to unite as we were 400 years ago, but that hasn't been the case. It inspires us to take responsibility and control racism because the society we live in now is not the same. It inspires us to know that just because your pastor preaches hate, doesn't mean you do.
