In America is a film about an Irish family who emigrates to New York to find a better job and improve their life, but ends up finding that it is very difficult to live in the United States. This is due to the problems they face regarding health, money and the general environment of the place where they live. There are many aspects of cultural geography that are addressed throughout the film. Some examples include the neighborhood they live in, the class of people, and the health factors that affect the people who live there. The film begins with John, Sarah, and their daughters Christy and Ariel crossing the border from Canada into the United States on a mission to find a better life and job. The first problem is finding an apartment, but eventually they find one in New York City, in a poor neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen. Afterwards, John and Sarah struggle to find work. John is an actor and practices constantly, but cannot find a job as an actor. The family faces many problems due to poverty and John believes it is his job to provide for them and make them feel comfortable. For example, he goes out of his way to find them an air conditioner due to the extreme heat in their apartment. One idea that is clearly shown in this film is that their dream did not go as they expected. They came to America in search of the American dream and went to one of the major cities. However, they did not expect to be inserted into the culture they had been placed into in New York. An example of the cultural difference they experience in New York is when girls have to make costumes for their school. Their costumes are homemade, while all the other classmates were purchased. This shows that…the middle of the card…has an impact on who people are. However, it is not only the environment that determines the individual, as determinism suggests. An article in Environmental Review states that “the environment is simply there, like clay, sometimes malleable by man-builder” (Sprout 1976, 64). This means that the environment suggests different paths for humans, but the path chosen depends on the human. This is the environmental possibility. Therefore, the rough neighborhood in the film does not completely determine how the family will end up. Instead, Hell's Kitchen offers opportunities to the family and they must decide how to use them in their lives. In this scenario, John chooses to live a moderate but happy life with his three children and wife. His environment does not force him to be like many other people such as drug dealers and criminals.
