Zoos have existed for thousands and thousands of years. The reason for this is very simple; humans are immensely and inexplicably fascinated by wild animals. While some people visit zoos because they are great educational tools, most go simply because it's fun and cheaper than traveling across the world to see a white tiger in its natural habitat. Zoos are thought to be sanctuaries for animals, revered and recognized because it has always been morally acceptable for animals to be used by humans as long as they provide for their needs. The main purposes that zoos claim to serve are conservation, research and education. Zoos certainly contribute in some way to the well-being of wildlife; however, the negative effects appear to far outweigh the benefits. I believe that all animals are sentient beings who deserve love and respect. Zoos manage to exploit and use animals for their own benefit and that is why I think they should be banned. One of the main claims made by zoos is that they take part in animal conservation and the breeding of endangered species. Zoos say they are saving threatened species and preparing them for release into their natural habitats. What many don't know is that zoos only maintain, and rarely improve, animal welfare. The truth is that only about 2% of zoo animals placed in breeding programs are actually at risk of extinction, and even fewer are at risk of being released back into the wilds of Quintero 2. Zoos primarily breed and raise animals they think will people will be more attracted, thus increasing revenue. Resources and money that could be spent on threatened animals are used to incarcerate animals that are doing well on their own. I believe that a true sanctuary does not buy, sell, breed or exploit is a...... middle of paper ...... ed., but frankly I believe that the concept of a zoo has reached an evolutionary dead end: millions of animals in captivity in inadequate and unnatural conditions, many suffering or displaying abnormal behavior, few species endangered and even fewer released into the wild.” Stevenson states (21).“…the existence of such animals does not depend on human action. If we avoid hunting them or destroying their ecosystems, they will be able to survive." Zamir states (197). I believe that all animals are sentient beings who deserve consideration, respect and understanding. I believe that all wild animals deserve to live free from humans. As Samir said, the lives of wild animals do not depend on human intervention, however, what we do to their habitats and ecosystems affects their lives and well-being. This is the opposite of what zoos do, and this is why they should be banned.
