Allie HensonEnglish 3AMr. Boatwright2.27.14The HelpThere are times in our lives when we find ourselves at a crossroads, afraid, confused, without a roadmap. The choices we make in those moments can define the rest of our days. Of course, when faced with the unknown, most of us prefer to turn around and go back. One person can change many lives, for better or for worse. In “The Help,” a novel by Kathryn Stockett, there is a young white woman, Skeeter, who lives in Jackson, Mississippi, and uses her writing talent to open the eyes of the people around her and to bring fulfillment to separation between whites and colours. Skeeter's book discusses the ideas of equality, unity among all, and the impact of others' opinions that can ruin one's innocence. This book powerfully addresses the idea of equality and opportunity for all. Skeeter is constantly pressured by her mother and her friends to get married. She never has the opportunity to choose for herself and "[She] always looks like someone else told her what to wear" (5). The author said this right at the beginning of the book to give the impression that she doesn't relate to her friends and other white women. They are always the ones telling others how to live, and so he says Skeeter relates more to the black maids who can never decide for themselves. Women at that time were seen only as housewives, committing the rest of their lives to being at home with their children. This idea and lifestyle was pushed so hard that Skeeter stated, “I'll never be able to tell Mom I want to be a writer. It will just turn it into another thing that separates me from married girls” (65). Realizing the lack of support from her mother, she ... middle of paper ... believes in lines. [She] doesn't do that anymore. They were in our heads. There weren't even any boundaries between black and white. Some people invented them a long time ago” (378). Everyone is born into this world innocent, and it is only the influences of others that plant the seed that further contaminates ways of thinking. Skeeter was courageous in the way she championed ideas of equality, unity among all, and the impact of the opinions of others. which can ruin the innocence of children. He took risks in discussing those main ideas to make a change in the future and to prevent future generations from making the same mistakes. Yet she understood that tragedies happen and giving up was not an option for her. The pain that everyone feels: it's life. Confusion and fear are there to remind you that somewhere out there there is something better and that something is worth fighting for.
