Topic > Comparison between Life of Pi and Bless Me, Ultima by Yann Martel...

A mentor is a trusted guide who shows you the path in life. Through Pi and Antonio's mentors, they help save them and show them the right path in life. In the novel Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya, Ultima shows Tony that good can always overcome evil, no matter how evil he may be. Yann Martel's Life of Pi shows that Pi can face his fears with the help of a large Bengal tiger in a small boat, and that the smallest things in life can change the course of how fate awaits you. Ultima shows the connection she has with Tony as soon as she arrives, letting him call her Ultima instead of Grande because Ultima believes that she and Antonio have a connection since Antonio was the last child that Ultima pulled out of Marias Antonio's mother's womb. After that moment, both Tony and Ultima grow closer and closer. She and Tony spend a lot of time together getting herbs for medicine or telling each other stories. When Tony has dreams, Ultima teaches him to read between the lines in his dreams and guides him as he tries to figure out his right place in his family, whether to be a Marez or a Luna. Wanting to please both his mother and father at the same time. Ultima also teaches Tony the practices of how to properly dig up a plant. They must tell the plant what they are doing before taking it away from its home. Teach Tony to show compassion for things you take for personal use. Ultima shows sympathy towards the people she has cured, proving to Tony that her magic isn't evil at all. "If my uncle had come first, he would have saved Ultima, but it's best not to think that way. Ultima said to take life's experiences and build strength from them and not weaknesses. (Anaya 245)" Tony explains all this that Ult ...... middle of the paper ...... to face our fears, looking them in the eyes. Note that tigers only attack when you don't look them straight in the eye. When Pi tries to tame Richard Parker by whistling, while Richard Parker gets seasick. Pi faces his fears instead of leaving them there and controlling him. We need to "blow the whistle" on our own fears and admit that we have a fear, so it becomes easier to control it in our lives. Richard Parker also teaches Pi his inner strength even though Pi does not show it "This was the terrible cost of Richard Parker. He gave me a life, my own, but at the cost of taking it away from me. He tore the flesh from the body of man and broke his bones. The smell of blood filled my nose. Then something died in me that never came back to life.
