Torture is the process of inflicting pain on other people to force them to say something against their will. The word “torture” comes from the Latin word “torquere,” which means to twist. Torture can be not only psychologically but also mentally painful. Before the Enlightenment it was perfectly legal to torture individuals, but nowadays it is illegal to torture anyone under any circumstances. In this essay I will demonstrate why torture should never be acceptable, regardless of the condition. From a moral point of view, torture is wrong and unacceptable. Many religious people are against this act of violence because they see it as a violation of the dignity of a human being. Human beings have the right to be free from intentional harm from others. The ban on torture also supports this right. Torture not only violates people's rights, but also violates the demands of justice. In the past, many citizens of our nation have been tortured and this has been a problem for us; but when you're not the one being tortured, it seems to be fine. Have you heard of the golden rule: “Treat others only as you agree to be treated in the same situation? (7)” This applies very well to this problem. On the other side, there are people who are very in favor of the use of torture. For them, torture is a “morally defensible” method of interrogation (8).
