Topic > Analysis of the movie Into the Wild, directed by Sean Penn

When people read a book they like, they look forward to seeing the movie based on that book. Many people criticize the film or are not satisfied with it. As you watch this film, it is visually breathtaking and relatable. Chris McCandless is played by Emile Hirsch who does an exceptional job portraying McCandless. McCandless' parents are Walt and Billie McCandless. In the book they are described as a bit presumptuous and snobbish. Sean Penn is the writer and director of the film adaptation of John Krakauer's Into the Wild. Sean Penn portrays Chris' parents in a negative way to show that they were essentially responsible for his estrangement from society. When Walt celebrates his birthday in the movie and book, it is on the back porch which is elevated and the rest of the house people are in the yard below Walt. Shows signs of narcissism. Which is an exaggerated sense of self-importance and self-centeredness (Wade and Carol 384). Walt believes he has more power than anyone else and is absorbed in his fantasy about his perfect family. Walt believed that because he was on the bridge, he had a higher status than anyone else at that party. When McCandless gave his father the top-of-the-line telescope, he had no emotion when opening the gift. This shows that Walt believed that any sign of emotion was a sign of weakness. Narcissistic people lack empathy towards others and are unwilling to understand or identify the needs and feelings of others (psychological and personality disorders). Walt shows this when he offers to buy McCandless a Cadillac for graduation in the film and book. McCandless bought his car with money he saved and loves it. Walt explains... middle of paper... why McCandless left. It is also relatable to young people because many people were in this type of position. Penn knew he needed a bigger reason as to why McCandless left. So he added these scenes to the film to show that he had a reason to leave his family and go on his journey. All these scenes in the film prove that his parents are the reason McCandless left and decided to live in the wilderness. Works Cited Into the Wild. Director Sean Penn. Perf.
