Charisma is a trait that many great leaders possess because it is what allows them to lead nations and bond with citizens. Henry, in William Shakespeare's “Henry V,” exudes charisma. Henry has numerous archetypal subsets of his personality, and using situational awareness, Henry exposes these sides of himself. The three main aspects of Henry, his personality, his wit and his leadership, show that he is a multidimensional figure in the story. Henry does not simply act like a man, but manipulates his own personality, displaying specific character types that he formulates to best suit his situations. Henry's personable nature is formed to enhance his ability to connect with his men. He uses this side of himself when he pretends to be a commoner before the Battle of Agincourt. From his early years as a wanderer, Henry understands the psyche of the common man and uses this experience to make himself accessible as a person. Henry realizes that morale is low and that his troops need to feel supported so as not to give up. To do this, Henry disguises himself and speaks as a friend to his men to understand their opinions on the future battle. This person is so different from what most men see of Henry that his men cannot even recognize their own king. Henry even gives up the name "Harry le Roy", where le roi is French for king. The goal of this meeting is to retrieve impartial information about how his men are feeling without the intimidation associated with talking to the king. With this character, Henry achieves such sincere results that he is insulted by a man named Williams. By disguising himself and changing his personality, Henry manipulates his own personality. He uses experiences from his previous lifestyle, builds on them and then uses... half paper... he's playful and if he needs to connect with someone he's nice. His ability to do so appears to be innate, and Henry's personality changes flow smoothly. Despite Henry's composure and ability to cycle through his personalities and choose the one best suited to certain situations, he is still sometimes surprised. This is interesting because his composure is never lost. Balance is a characteristic found in all Henrys and is what helps his personality cycle. These characteristics can provide insight into today's leaders. People with the ability to draw on their past experiences to connect with and manipulate those around them are described as charismatic. Numerous eminent people in modern society have been described as having this characteristic. These people are men like Martin Luther King Jr and Barack Obama.
