Vietnam, a country like no other, rich in culture, traditions and with a multi diverse community, has been the topic of much debate for years and is often mentioned with animosity and Most of us only associate this country with a negative moment in our history, the Vietnam War. We would like to show what makes this country so unique and hopefully teach others that there is more to their culture than just the negative connotations associated with a terrible war. One of the things that make Vietnam so unique is its multidiverse population and language. There are a total of 54 ethnic groups in the country. These groups were influenced by Chinese, French, Russians and Americans. The Viet (Kinh) are the majority group and represent over 86% of the population (vietnamembassy-usa.org), they are scattered throughout the country especially in the main cities, in the Red River Delta, in the coastal delta and in the Mekong. The other 53 groups are scattered across the mountainous area stretching from north to south. Some of the minority groups that have a population of around 1 million each are: Tay, Thai, Muong, Hoa, Khmer and Nung. Some of these groups work in agriculture, growing rice plants, while others engage in hunting and fishing. Many ethnic groups divide the population into social brackets and are more oriented towards kinship groups and small communities. All ethnic groups have unique cultures and dialects, but they all share key lifestyle characteristics. For Vietnamese people, family is the center of their culture. The traditional family structure is patriarchal and the eldest male is the decision maker and spokesperson of the family; they are highly respected and honored. Outside the home the husband will ...... middle of paper ......on, we point them out, however if you do it during a conversation with a Vietnamese person it will be considered rude. Since Vietnam is so diverse when it comes to ethnic groups, having a way to communicate is very important. For them, nonverbal communication is an essential part of their language. They can speak and understand others while preserving their regional dialects and maintaining a peaceful environment among each other. Before this project I had little knowledge of Vietnam. Every time I heard that name, I started thinking about the war that affected so many lives and how this terrible incident has become part of our history. Vietnam is rich in culture; its ethnic groups are unique and different in many respects, but they all share the fundamental characteristics of a country that has fought and overcome many obstacles while maintaining its essence and roots.
