Content vs. MethodIn Stanley Fish's “Conspiracy Theories 101,” he writes about the meaning of academic freedom and applies it to the topic of Professor Kevin Barrett's lecture on a conspiracy theory, held at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Fish explains that Barrett should have the academic freedom to give his lecture on 9/11 conspiracy theories as long as the topic is raised for “scholarly questioning and analysis.” Fish also proves himself to be both academically responsible and irresponsible. The study of a topic such as astrology is also discussed and how as long as a topic “structure, history, influence and so on” is brought up in class discussion. From the analysis of the text I personally deciphered Fish's definition of academic freedom as the ability to teach or lecture on a topic as long as there is no political agenda or indoctrination, a definition which differs from other definitions such as those of Patrick Farrell or Kevin Barrett. Fish ultimately argues that academic freedom is not about the topic of a lesson, but about the method by which it is taught and that this is a very important distinction. Kevin Barrett, when teaching his "strong belief" on a theory that the government was behind 9/11, was said to be crossing a certain line set on academic freedom while Patrick Farrell, decided that both opinions/sides of a topic should be presented regardless of popularity. Fish's definition would differ from these in saying that neither was right. People who spoke openly about Kevin Barrett's tactics in class lectures and the University's president, Farrell, supported a definition of academic freedom that Fish saw as surrounding the specific content...half of the paper...n just one Opinion is taught during the lesson, through Fish's definition students will still have the opportunity to analyze that opinion and decide whether they agree or disagree without any pressure. This creates a great opportunity for students to practice thinking for themselves. Fish overall strongly supports his definition of academic freedom, which differs from that of Patrick Farrell and the definition of others. Its definition allows the analysis of all topics and broadens the lines of education. Astrology, Kevin Barrett's 9/11 conspiracy theory, and even cocaine can be taught in an academic context by Fish's definition. As long as the political agenda is excluded from the lesson, then history, structure, information and opinion can be studied and analysed, after all Fish believes it is a question of the method of teaching, not the content..
