The first notable aspect of No Country for Old Men is the absence of as much punctuation as possible. McCarthy used very few apostrophes, quotation marks, or any other basic punctuation to provide a variety of effects. His writing style is just like the setting of the book: reduced to the bare minimum, simple and completely open. It also almost forces you to reread many sentences to take in all the information that McCarthy has subtly inserted into each line. It's a very unique yet captivating style, particularly for this piece of literature. McCarthy's literary style adds a different aspect to what is already an action-packed novel. Point of view played a huge role in No Country for Old Men. The addition of the first person from Sheriff Bell's point of view almost added another side conflict. Without being able to read what he truly felt, the reader would not be aware of the guilt and guilt he is straddling. This emotional burden stemmed from an execution he was responsible for in the past. He “sent a boy to the gas chamber in Huntsville. One and only one. My arrest and my testimony. I went up there and visited him two or three times. Three times. The last time was the day of his execution. I didn't have to go but I did. (Page 3). For Sheriff Bell, tracking down and killing Anton Chigurh was the only way to maintain his trust and dignity as sheriff. After failing to catch the mass murderer, he felt that resigning was the right thing to do. However, without being able to delve into Bell's mind, he would be just another stock character. McCarthy's use of first-person point of view adds a different and interesting perspective to what is already an interesting and exciting plot.
