Sikh Issues in a Post 9/11 World The Sikh Muslim community in the United States has increasingly faced violence and discrimination against its own people since 9/11. According to the FBI, anti-Muslim increased by 50% in 2010 after the September 11 attacks. The groups of people who encourage these types of hate crimes are misinformed and prejudiced against an entire religion, instead of humanely focusing on one group of terrorists who have caused so much turmoil in the United States. September 15, 2001, 4 days later In the worst attack on American soil, the Sikh owner of a Chevron gas station in a Phoenix suburb was murdered by a gunman. This was one of the first major instances of violence against Sikh-Americans following the attacks. 42-year-old gunman Frank Roque killed 49-year-old Balbir Singh Sodhi because he was lashing out at "Arabs" after seeing repeated footage of the World Trade Center attacks on television. The only way to reduce and eliminate these problems is to educate Americans about their faith and lifestyle. There is a long road ahead for the Sikh community, but I hope that one day ignorance will decrease and we can all live in a peaceful country.
