Topic > Becoming an Orthodontist - 1379

Second Draft Career Document: The main job of an orthodontist is to properly align the teeth and ensure that the patient's facial structure grows properly. An aspiring orthodontist needs approximately ten years of education. After you finish the necessary training, you can run an orthodontic business with or without another orthodontist. While it may seem like a lot of work, orthodontists are well paid and have many benefits. Becoming an orthodontist requires specific education, including: four years of college, four years of dental school, and two to three years of orthodontic residency. (Chaekal). The aspiring orthodontist may specialize in health studies, premedical studies, or life studies. College courses such as biology, chemistry and physics are also required. This individual will be prepared for dental school through classroom instruction and laboratory instruction on the physiology of the human body, particularly focusing on the structure of the mouth and jaw. (Training portal, “Specializations for an aspiring orthodontist”). After completing four years of college, they move on to dental school. However, it is not always a guaranteed acceptance as dental schools are quite competitive and expensive. Dental schools often look for new students with a high GPA, excellent recommendations, and a high score on the dental acceptance test taken in their first year of college. The dental school offers class courses such as anatomy, microbiology, biochemistry, physiology, clinical science, and laboratory techniques. When taking these courses, students learn about local anesthesia, periodontology, or the study of oral disease, health, and radiology. The first two years of dental school are generally dedicated to learning the basics. .....ist. 2014. Web. 15 April 2014. JPEGCardenas, Heidi. Orthodontic assistant requirements. 2014. Web.
