The Mbuti Pygmies live in the African Congo. They are a foraging culture that depends on hunting and gathering for their survival, as well as the ability to trade with agricultural villages. Living in the rainforest gives rise to changes in mood and changes in the plant and animal environment. Adapting to these elements to survive here for a hunter-gatherer society with Mbuti did very well. They have never used more resources than necessary for their survival, which is what we call a subsistence economy. Foraging communities are called immediate return systems, meaning that consumption of food and other resources occurs immediately. They keep very few surpluses and very little desire to store goods, as if they need something that they can go out and get from the surrounding environment (Woodburn, 1988). Being a hunter-gatherer society gives way to different ways they approach relationships, politics, and social organizations. Having the ability to adapt to your surroundings is an important key in a hunter-gatherer society because of how much resources and time change. plays a role. The Mbuti practice a more primary generalized reciprocity in which they exchange goods with people they know and trust. The Mbuti tend the farming villages with meat and other goods while the farming villages trade starch products and hire the Mbuti to do jobs they are not familiar with. The roles of men and women in this culture are very small but they both play an important role in how this band survives. Being a hunter-gatherer society, the division of labor is distinct among Mbuti men and women as to who hunts and who gathers among them. The Mbuti use their spirituality to bless the land they live in to continue to provide for them. The Mbuti are influenced by their horticultural substance in several aspects of their lives, from relationships with each other to their political organization and how their economy is influenced by their ability to hunt and gather their own resources..
