Topic > Essay on Hurricane Sandy - 904

People did many things to prepare for Hurricane Sandy. Many people living on or near the coast received evacuation orders from government officials. These areas are likely to experience severe flooding. Particularly in danger were people living at low altitudes along the coast. These people left their homes in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut; some were lucky enough to find a hotel to stay in or relatives to stay with. Others who weren't so lucky waited in community shelters. Organizations like the American Red Cross opened shelters specifically for people who had to leave their homes due to Hurricane Sandy. People living in Jersey City, New York filled sandbags and built bag walls against doors and around tunnels to try to keep water out. Some even boarded up their windows to prevent flying objects from breaking the glass. Those who kept boats along the coast moved them to safer places. People even cut down trees to prevent them from crashing into buildings or knocking down power lines. Many stores were running out of basic supplies. People who had not been evacuated from their homes began stocking up on essentials. They went to grocery stores and got all kinds of supplies; bread, canned goods, bottled water, gas generators, batteries, radios, flashlights. Gas-powered generators would help in case of power outages. Government officials warned people that it would be dangerous to go outside once the storm hit. Officials encouraged people not to travel. They ordered people to stay off highways where forecasters predicted the storm would hit. The New York subway was closed and all flights in or out of the area were cancelled. Schools and buses... middle of paper... there was no electricity. It was like a domino effect. They are also changing copper wires to active fiber cables. They had to change and rebuild things after the sinkhole, just like they did with Hurricane Sandy. After the Sinkhole some students had to move to Tangerine because there wasn't enough room for everyone at Lake Windsor without laptops. Old Charley Burns, the head of the civil engineering company, has been fired. He didn't check and make sure the places were safe to build things on. It has been corrupted; he took vacation. Since Charley Burns was fired, Paul's father replaced him. Paul's dad told everyone that things would change with him now. He wouldn't let himself be bribed, and he would actually check and make sure that the places that people were building on were safe, and they weren't building things on sinkholes..
