What is a bartender? Merriam Webster states that it is a person who mixes and serves alcoholic beverages in a bar. Nowhere in the definition does it say “Beware of behavior” or “Beware of drunken disorder”. “Bartenders are those who fill patrons' orders at a bar itself or receive a drink order from a waiter or waitress which he or she will take and serve to the customer.” (Benson, Beth). Being a bartender requires patience and a lot of responsibility. A job is a job, no matter what the job is. If he is hired for a position, he is obligated to do what is required of the position. Bartenders should not be held responsible for the behavior of their customers. Despite the fact that customers feel that bartenders are there to make their time enjoyable, customers do not understand the responsibilities that bartenders have and are expected to have. Some bars require their bartenders to keep an eye on visibly intoxicated patrons and count the alcoholic drinks they serve. Lenny Deserio, a reporter for The Voice Online, interviewed bar owners about the situation. In Lenny's article he stated: Lambert then went on to say, “I ask my bartenders to keep a tally of how many drinks per hour a customer is having. I also urge them to keep an eye on their speech patterns; Do they start to slur when they talk or sway when they walk? These are obvious signs that someone is drunk. If someone gets drunk we call the police and stop the customer until the police get here.” When a customer is drunk and clearly visible, a bartender will most likely provide a taxi. It is up to the customer to decide whether to reject or accept the offer. When a bartender offers drinks to customers with... middle of paper... content. August 13, 2007Web.
