The e-tailing industry is described as “the electronic sale of retail goods over the Internet” (DMS Retail, 2011, p.2). Information technology in the e-tail industry is developing with "the emergence of standardized Web 2.0 technology, and open source software packages, shopping cart and e-commerce tools have become cheaper, more powerful, standardized and packed with all kinds of interactive, multi-channel and multimedia features” (E-Commerce Times, 2007, p.1). Large companies such as Dell, Amazon, eBay and Canadian Tire have identified themselves as successful companies in e- tailing thanks to their understanding of the customer interface and the use of customer information in managing the electronic supply chain. Development of Web 2.0 as a technology has enabled e-tailing due to its ability to bundle IT programs (Chaffey, 2009). ) Web 2.0 is “a collection of web services that facilitate certain online behaviors such as community participation and user-generated content, classification, and labeling” (Chaffey, 2009, p.752). At the moment Web 2.0 is becoming obsolete and Web 3.0 is becoming the future concept. Web 3.0 is “the next generation web that incorporates high-speed connectivity, complex community interactions, a full range of digital media (text, voice, video), and an intelligent or semantic web where automated applications can access data of various online services to assist researchers perform complex vendor selection tasks” (Chaffey, 2009, p.752). Open source software packages are “developed collaboratively, vendor-neutral, by a community of software developers” (Chaffey, 2009, p.156). Some benefits of using open source software are that purchasing is effectively free, one level lower... middle of paper... a crucial factor in developing the future of e-commerce.
