Topic > The Ideal Body Type: As Represented in the Media and…

The inspiration for this topic, which will be explored further later, was Sunny Bergman's video. She has produced several documentaries such as “Sletvrees” (Bergman, 2013) in which she talks about how women encounter unrealistic expectations that are asked of them, particularly regarding their sexuality. In his documentaries he explores parts of Europe such as the Netherlands and Great Britain, but also travels to Cuba to get a taste of how things work there. Watching these videos sparked great interest in its main idea and led me to ask a question that addressed expectations and attitudes about body image across gender and culture. I want to delve deeper into these unrealistic expectations of what bodies should look like by further exploring its representation in media and how it varies across cultures, ethnicities, and gender. In the culture and environment around me it is not uncommon to hear people talk about problems they have with weight, or that they are dissatisfied with their body parts (which they often can't do much about) and how they reflect this dissatisfaction through eating patterns unhealthy or excessive exercise. There are strict rules about how to look and dress, and this is a common topic of conversation that I too am a part of. I am no different, and although I am aware of the harmful effects these negative views have on the body, I have difficulty distancing myself from them. I notice that they too are integrated into who I am: how I live and think. Having been ingrained in this idea of a negative body image since I was at least seven years old, I feel like it's something I've been aware of for a long time. However, not since the course on Gender and Sexuality have I realized that this ideal body type represented is everywhere around us. Now I... half of the paper... I. (2010).
