There are many issues in the United States that are hotly debated. Some people are so set in their belief on one topic that they don't even consider an opposing argument. Gun control is third on the list of topics where people are unwilling to listen to the opposition's arguments. One side of the gun control argument is that we need more gun control. The other side says we don't need stronger laws, or that we need fewer laws. My position on the matter is that we don't need stronger gun control laws. The thesis of this article will focus on the argument against stricter gun laws. The antithesis will center on the opposition's belief that there should be stronger gun control laws. Finally, the summary will focus on rebutting the arguments made in the antithesis.Part 1: ThesisThere has been ongoing discussion about what exactly the Second Amendment means. For those opposed to further gun control laws, the meaning is clear, it states that people have the right to keep and bear arms. Therefore, the outcome of District of Columbia v. Heller was a real win. She was the first federal appeals court judge to issue the edict that the Second Amendment meant just what it says; “the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” (Neily III, 2010). Additionally, requiring trigger safety or gun disassembly at home has been ruled unconstitutional because it makes it nearly impossible for citizens to protect themselves, their property, and their family (Cornell University Law School, n.d.). . However, it remains to be seen whether other federal judges will uphold this edict and whether state judges will enforce it.
