Leora Tanenbaum's book Slut! imposes the topic of the injustice and meanness of the sexual double standard among teenagers and what leads them to label others with the name of slut. Throughout the book, the author reveals many different studies and stories to help readers understand the cause and problem behind the name "slut" and how it affects different girls and women across the country. Girls are criticized as sluts because they fall outside of what is expected of the American ideal of femininity.2. Sexually active girls and women are ashamed because of the sexual double standard presented in our society. Hitting a slut can have a positive or negative impact on a girl; empowers some girls by giving them a sense of perspective while others break down and become self-destructive.4. The distinction between girls and women is not whether they are smart or interesting; It depends on whether you are a 'good' girl or a 'bad' girl.5. Women are dehumanized and considered sexual objects because their value is measured in sexual terms; thus creating the concept of slut.6. Girls are expected to be sexual by pleasing the men around them; and at the same time not have sexual intercourse for the purpose of pleasing men and the people around them.7. When other girls' reputations are diminished, girls also diminish their self-esteem. The slut label is the most powerful tool used to shame another girl. It says “two in five girls nationwide – 42% – have had sexual rumors spread about them.” (Page xiv) This shows the use of power by dominant groups through their awareness that girls must have a specific attitude and behavior. Men use slut bashing to keep sexuality in check while women use slut bashing to undermine other women. In both cases, the power to do so governs many actions people take. So to speak, knowledge can make or break a person. It can act as an advantage, for power, or as a loss, for ignorance. “Don't take what you know for granted.
