In 2013, Apple sold a total of over 33.8 million iPhones. Approximately 20% of the more than 4,400 students between the ages of 11 and 18 have been victims of inappropriate use of technology. This includes cheating, sexting and cyberbullying. Some school districts are beginning to relax policies regarding the use of personal electronic devices in schools. Over 75% of teenage students own a cell phone. If those 75% brought their cell phones to school, what would the remaining 25% of students do? I firmly believe that personal electronic devices should not be allowed in schools. First, students may be using their personal electronic devices inappropriately. For example, cheating is very likely while allowing the use of personal electronic devices in schools. And everyone knows that not every student in a class can be trusted. Students as of now without using personal electronics cheat in so many ways. Writing on a piece of paper, on your hand, on the table, giving answers or even just copying someone else are common tricks used in my classes today. One might just imagine that doors will open that allow personal electronics in schools. Calculators, online answers (Google search, answer book, etc.) or SMS to get answers. Secondly, visiting inappropriate websites is also a big problem. Although these sites are blocked on school computers, they are not located on any of the student's personal electronic devices. Once they log into the WI-Fi, which my school personally provides a username and password for, they stop the person unless they get caught, which is not guaranteed to happen 100% of the time. The student can browse any website that he and the teachers would never notice! I've already seen people texting, playing games and watching videos and my teachers never noticed! One last problem:... the central part of the card... is huge and heavy. Online textbooks have answers and if they don't have them the student can easily find the answer book online. Some online textbooks cost money. Will students now have to pay for their own textbooks, especially in public schools? It might save the school some money, but it costs a lot more for families who can't afford it. No research has been conducted to prove that having textbooks online makes you smarter than having textbooks held in your hand. Cheating, sexting, cyberbullying, distractions, decreased self-esteem and inappropriate use. These are all important negatives to prove my point that the use of personal electronic devices in schools should not be allowed. This shows that personal electronics are not a very well thought out idea. Go ahead, take a stand and fight for what's right! Create a petition in your community and make a difference.
