Reflecting on the readings, it is clear that parenting is a balance between responsive and demanding (Maccoby & Martin, 1983). As parents we have to raise and regulate our children and the best approach to do so would be to follow the authoritative style. Authoritative parenting appears to be most beneficial to a child's long-term academic and social success. . “They monitor and impart clear standards for their children's conduct. They are assertive, but not intrusive or restrictive. Their disciplinary methods are supportive, rather than punitive. They want their children to be assertive as well as socially responsible and self-regulating as well as cooperative" (Baumrind, 1991, p. 62). Variation in parenting styles may be part of the differentiation presented within the classroom. This variation can be presented in the behavior, maturity, and academic preparation of individual students within the classroom.
