Who was Harold Shipman? Harold Shipman was a family doctor who killed approximately 250 patients over the course of 27 years. The local undertaker became alarmed at the amount of human life that had died at the hands of Dr Shipman, the police were then contacted by another doctor at the Centre. An investigation was conducted into Shipman, but he was not charged with any wrongdoing. As more evidence was gathered, another investigation was launched. On September 7, 1998, Harold Shipman was charged with 15 counts of murder. (A+E 2014) The suspicions raised by Dr Reynolds (colleague) increased when an increasing number of women died on the ward without any sign of previous illness. Reynolds decided to contact the local undertaker; this revealed that patients were being found dead in their homes while Shipman was present. The undertaker decided to pass this information on to Chief Superintendent Sykes, the main issue being the amount of cremation certificates Shipman was asking other doctors to sign.
