IntroductionThe experiences of young Americans have changed significantly over the past two decades. One of the biggest changes is the advancement and accessibility of technology. While these advancements are beneficial to society; there are cases of dismay, especially regarding bullying. Cyberbullying has become a hot topic in recent years due to the severity of some cases brought to public attention. There are many reasons for cyberbullying and the consequences can be life-threatening. History Cyberbullying began with the use of chat rooms available to users through various websites and Internet providers. With these new platforms, teenagers were able to express themselves while remaining anonymous. There was little or no monitoring of these sites and the insults were very likely to come from people you had never met and whose names you did not know. Immediately afterwards there was the creation of Social Networks. These sites are more personalized profiles that provide a platform for people to express themselves and share social events with others. Cyberbullying was not a problem before the Internet became a household necessity, however, traditional (face-to-face) bullying existed, but was limited to physical interaction. According to Strom, P. and R. Strom “cyberspace represents a new territory for peer mistreatment” (36). Because cyberbullying affects adolescents emotionally and psychologically, more attention has been drawn to the problem. Causes The reasoning behind cyberbullying is vast and not fully understood. Cyberbullying, like traditional bullying, is typically the result of anger.
