The Most Dangerous Game: The Hunters and the HuntedRichard Connell's short story, The Most Dangerous Game, is about a famous hunter named Rainsford who falls from a yacht and lands on a 'island called Ship - Trap Island. Later, Rainsford meets another man named; General Zaroff, who he later discovers, enjoys hunting humans, as he was bored hunting animals. Zaroff later announces to Rainsford that he will be the next player for his hunting party, and so Zaroff tells Rainsford that he will hunt him down, and if Rainsford survives 3 days without being killed, he will be able to leave the island. Throughout this tale there is a continuing theme about the two classes of people in the world, the hunters and the hunted. General Zaroff and Rainsford find themselves separated from these roles on and off as the hunt progresses. Therefore, in this short story, Connell portrays the idea that there are two classes of people in the world, the hunters and the hunted, in relation to Rainsford and Zaroff, through the use of foreshadowing. On the yacht, Rainsford states to his friend Whitney, "The world is made up of two classes: the hunters and the hunted." (Connell 40). This quote charts a path for the rest of the story, as almost everything about this story reflects this idea. From Rainsford's perspective, his life is all about hunting. He only took the side of the hunter and views everything else as prey, which is a very narrow interpretation of the world. This is ironic, as he becomes the prey while playing the dangerous game with General Zaroff, which he didn't expect. This quote also foreshadows that there will be a dangerous game/hunt, that... halfway through the paper... that Rainsford was already dead, until she saw him behind the curtains of his bedroom. . Zaroff then states, “One of us will have to provide a meal for the hounds. The other will sleep in this most excellent bed.” (Connell 58) The story then ends with Rainsford deciding that he has never slept in a better bed. Therefore, the reader can infer that Zaroff was sent to provide a meal for the hounds. Patel 4 At the end of the story Zaroff and Rainsford experienced the role of the prey, which both of them never expected, as they have always been so used to it. to be in power, like the hunter. Using foreshadowing helps predict the outcomes that will occur, so that the ending isn't as surprising or confusing to the reader.
