Topic > Drag Racing: The Ethics of Drag Racing?

The Ethics of Highway Drag Racing Is highway drag racing ethical? This may seem like an easy yes or no answer to most people. However, in the following article the ethical theories devised by many different people over the years will help to further explore what would or would not deem the act of racing on a highway to be ethical. Different theories lead us to approach the question from different points of view and will vary the answer to said question based on their different criteria. At the conclusion, the matter will be re-examined with all theories in mind and I will give a thoughtful summary of which theories apply to my view on the topic. If we were to follow the point of view of utilitarianism, we would seek for the maximum happiness of all those involved in the matter. It is not necessarily the greatest good for the greatest number of people, but it seems to be the general action aimed at creating the highest average happiness. Happiness is pleasure, but it must be a dignified pleasure. The act cannot create the utilitarian vision of happiness if it lacks dignity. The deciding factors in whether something is ethical or not are making sure all possibilities are considered and then seeing which course of action will create the greatest amount of happiness. If the action creates the greatest happiness among all other possibilities without losing dignity, then the act can be considered ethical. When it comes to highway drag racing, there are many factors to consider. The drag racers themselves, other drivers on the highway, and anyone else on or along that road must be taken into account in calculating which action creates the most pleasure or happiness. Drag r...... middle of paper...... on the highway is unethical. Only when we talk about the Symphony does it even seem to come close to an ethical act. I also consider it a bit exaggerated. Runners and the race itself should adhere to very strict terms to agree with all the ethical standards listed. In all the others, however, it seems almost clear and cut that it is unethical to drag out the race on the highway. Personally, I don't see how or why the ethics of drag racing can be discussed. When lives are put in danger, especially those of those who do not consent, it is natural and learned that an act such as this should not be performed. Even in the case of late at night and “no one is on the road,” it's the predictable and unpredictable consequences, the innate feeling you get watching the act that proves to me that drag racing, at least on the highway, is truly immoral..
