Suu Kyi was the co-founder and became the general secretary of the NLD. In the same year, but a month earlier, the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) was established. The SLORC “…prohibited the rights of the Burmese people – limiting the number of people who could gather to discuss politics and reinstating arrests and/or prosecutions without trial” (“Aung San”). It became illegal for the Burmese; for example, Suu Kyi, for speaking out against the junta in support of the idea of democracy, Suu Kyi was seen as a nemesis of the SLORC and was placed under house arrest, especially in view of the upcoming elections, despite not being able to run in the 1990 elections his party, the NLCD, won with 83% (Ghosh). The junta did not take it well and decided to ignore the results and remained in power
