Looking back in history there have been many wars, and with wars come citizens who are patriotic and serve during wars. During the Civil War, people had been patriotic in many ways other than going to war. The women, who were at home taking care of the family, sent patriotic envelopes containing letters that would lift the spirits of the fighters. Some would have flags on them and have slogans and mottos that say "God Bless America" or "for God and Country" (Arispe). But these envelopes weren't just there to lift the spirits of the fighters, they were also there to help inform people about the war. One famous envelope shows "Quaker Jane" handing "Quaker Jim" a rifle, telling him to support the war. Although they were Quakers, they had a sense of duty to fight. Robert E. Lee also wrote a letter to his son saying: "As an American citizen, I am very proud of my country, its prosperity and its institutions, and any state would be defended if its rights were invaded."(Prentice) .
