“Silence is the element in which great things are shaped.” - Thomas Carlyle stated it best when he saw that within society no one wants to be judged or seen as different, so silence was the best cure for them; repressing their true thoughts and emotions provided them with security. In Audre Lord's "The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action," Lord saw her life as a secluded darkness that she continued to endure only to escape the risk of being judged, misunderstood, or even killed for speaking the truth. Audre's stance on silence strongly reflects Alifat Rifaat who writes "Another Evening at the Club" about how silence affects the relationship between husband and wife and the servant who works in their home. Audre Lord's story tells of silence and the many wrongs that can come from it, creating a bridge that disconnects her from others and even her inner self. He wants people to understand that this will only cause obstacles in the future when they repress their emotions and nothing can be done if there is only one voice. He stated, "Asking questions or speaking as I believed might be met with pain or death," but it was something he wanted people to shy away from; she wanted the gap created by silence to close, and in doing so, she took on the risk of being judged, misunderstood, hurt, killed, or injured. Audre Lord wanted the information, the knowledge of women to be recognized and told, to make a difference in the lives of others. Being black, female, and lesbian, she faced many obstacles, but judging herself and taking on the transformation and responsibility that her culture instilled in her gave her courage. Audre Lord's words are reflected in the situation of Alifat Rifaat's story “Anot ... in the center of the card ... and herself from the same treatment she would have received if she had been in the maid's shoes. Keeping her away from the eyes of the public who would misjudge her. At one point the wife felt guilty about what she and her husband accused the servant, but after her husband made the final decision, she was forced to swallow her thoughts and emotions, repress them and go forward smiling and being happy as a wife should. In conclusion it is seen that both Audre Lord and Alifa Rifaat want to express their point of view on silence, communication problems and the pain it can cause when someone does nothing about it, as husband and wife. There will always be consequences of what someone has to say, but whether big or small, speaking up and expressing a set of feelings will further level the playing field for understanding and create better relationships with others..
