When it comes to the role of women in society they have been discriminated against for centuries. In various countries women have been presented as a sexual object, a nurturing role and in other cases a helpless victim. Women are more often discriminated against than glorified and in the stories "Constant Death Beyond Love", "Of Clay we are Created" and "In Camera" the roles played by women are linked by the theme of discrimination and all share the same theme of having an emotional disconnect with men. Delving deeper into the story of "The Constant of Death Beyond Love", as readers discover that the story is about a senator named Onesimo Sanchez who comes from a perfect family and while most of the community loves the senator, a gentleman of name Nelson no. Time and again Nelson begs the senator to grant him a false identity, but Onesimus graciously denies him until one day he meets Sanchez's daughter, Laura Farina. When the senator meets Farina he is "breathless" (p. 991). After Nelson sees Onsimo's reaction to his daughter, he sends her to visit the king. The senator immediately falls for the bait and tries to take advantage of the opportunity to see Laura. In the book his fate is described as "unusual beauty was even more challenging than his pain, and then he decided that death had made his decision for him." Onesimus discovers that Laura is wearing a girdle so he cannot take full advantage of her, but agrees to carry out her father's wishes. As she lay in his arms, he said, “Forget the key and sleep a little with me. It's nice to be with someone when you're so alone. After the senator rejected the key, the book describes that six months and eleven days later that night she died in her bed completely isolated... middle of paper... she was not abused, she was still in great pain and going through a great grief after the loss of his family. The author of this story refers to women being discriminated against because she was born in the 40s and came from chili pepper. In his biography he writes: “I was not supposed to be a liberated person in any way. I was a woman born in the 1940s into a patriarchal family; I was supposed to get married and make everyone around me happy. –Isabel Allende (pg. 1224) Overall, these stories all represent the same theme: women doing something that changes another person's life, media corruption, and women discriminated against based on gender. As a reader, these stories have been my favorites during this time and as a young woman in society with big goals, I feel that women's equality is a constant struggle, not only in other countries but also in the United States..
