At the beginning of Dennis Lehane's Shutter Island, Teddy Daniels is intelligent, full of grit, intelligent and determined. Teddy believes he is a US Marshal sent to the Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane on Shutter Island with his partner Chuck, to investigate the case of an escaped patient, Rachel Solando. Rachel is said to be a very dangerous patient who killed her three children. He somehow manages to escape from his cell in the psychiatric ward and finds himself somewhere on the island. As soon as Teddy and Chuck get off the ferry and reach the desolate island, they are greeted with detachment and suspicion. None of the employees provide any real evidence of the patient's disappearance and their responses seem scripted. The guards, guardians and doctors always keep an eye on them. When they meet the lead psychologist, Dr. Cawley, he seems affable and speaks suggestively, withholding most of the information he knows about Rachel Solando. Despite the monstrous hurricane that hits the island, Teddy remains determined and strong. Refusing to give up, Teddy marches into the brutal storm, insisting on searching for Rachel. When Teddy and Chuck go out to explore the island, the intensity of the hurricane is described thus: “Ashcliffe is shrouded to their left somewhere in the roar of wind and rain. The situation worsened significantly over the next half hour, and they shrugged their shoulders to hear each other speak and listed themselves as drunk” (139). The storm is still hitting the island hard, Teddy continues to fight it no matter what. Another example of his grit is shown when he climbs a huge cliff to reach a cave. To reach the cave where he believes Chuck is camping, Teddy climbs an extreme... paper medium... that was created by himself, he is truly evil, Andrew Laeddis. . Teddy uses Andrew to symbolize the side of himself he can't stand and has a deep hatred for. The guilt Andrew experienced was too much to bear alone. So he created Teddy Daniels, a heroic US Marshal held on Shutter Island against his will. When in reality Andrew Laeddis is a crazy patient living in a hallucination to cope with his sins. Teddy is a dynamic character because he went from not knowing who he is to understanding who he really is. Andrew lies about recognizing who he is in order to receive a lobotomy so he can forget all his pain forever. In conclusion, Teddy Daniels/Andrew Laeddis faces many conflicts throughout the story which makes him a dynamic character. After all, it's better to live like a monster or die like a good man?
