According to An Introduction To Language written by Viktoria Fromkin and Robert Rodman, language is a property of the mind that "distinguishes humans from animals." Because we are human beings, we have an innate talent for speaking. Language allows speakers to communicate with each other, to express ideas, hypotheses, emotions, desires at any time and in any situation. We can “hardly find a moment of our waking life free from words” since we live in such a creative world that is shaped by language. This also helps us raise a simple question: what actually is language? (Fromkin and Rodman, 1998) According to Fromkin's writing, linguistic knowledge means that "one has the ability to produce sounds that signify certain meanings and to understand or interpret the sounds produced by others." Linguistic knowledge therefore includes, on the one hand, linguistic skills such as phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and lexicon, linked by grammar; and, on the other hand, it also includes linguistic performance, understood as the ability to produce sentences with meaning and understanding. (Fromkin and Rodman, 1998) First let me introduce what terms exactly language proficiency covers. Phonology deals with the sound patterns of a language, also with the organizational system of sign language. The smallest contrastive units of the phonetic system of a language – that is, vowels and consonants – are called phonemes. Phonemes combine with each other to form words, i.e. morphemes, which are the minimal units that carry meaning. Morphology deals with the structure of these morphemes and other linguistic units, such as affixes, suffixes, word roots, accents etc. The infinite combinations of morphemes - which satisfy... middle of the paper... their theories were created by individual minds. This is also a reason why we are unable to say where one science ends and the other begins. In conclusion I must confess that language means much more than I thought before taking this course and before writing this essay. That is to say, language acquisition rather has a biological and evolutionary perspective, especially since language is something that humans are born with. Any normal newborn is capable of learning any language he or she is exposed to. Other fauna species, however, are only able to emulate the sounds of a word or phrase without understanding their meaning as they do not possess any type of innate mental grammar. Only humans have such an innate talent, such a subconscious operating system that makes them generate meaningful and grammatically correct sentences.
