They won't hire the person who didn't turn in their homework or who didn't show up for class. They want the person who got good grades and showed commitment. Most companies (when hiring) have a grade point average requirement. It is usually average two point three to three point five or higher. This means that after graduation if you want a job at a company that has fixed score requirements, you can't get hired. This is the case with many high-paying jobs, so it's important to do your best to get the best grades possible. If you want a well-paying job that turns into a career you need good grades. Without a decent grade point average, an employer for a serious career won't even take the time to read your resume and call you for an interview. They don't want to waste their time on someone who wouldn't put in the effort while they were in school. They will be looking for someone who has applied themselves from the beginning and can continue to apply themselves.
