2. Agenda cycle:-2.1. Problem Identification:-In Jharkhand the problems are multi-pronged but the two most important problems are:-a) Mining:- Jharkhand is one of the most mineral rich states in India. Some statistics show that around 40% of India's total mineral reserves are located in Jharkhand. One can find all the biggest names of the industry in Jharkhand like Tata Steel, Jindal Steel, Arcelor-Mittal etc. But in terms of human development index, Jharkhand is still one of the least developed states. The basic reason for this irony is the overexploitation of mines and only a few get maximum benefit from it. Those people whose land is mined are the ones who get the least from mining. Some problems that may arise due to mining activities are:-i) Formation of sinkholes and land subsidence:- When coal is mined from the mines, the pillars support the roof of the mines. But once mining is finished, it should be filled with sand to protect any mine collapses. But this is usually not done and soil collapse can occur. Many areas of Jharkhand are facing the threat of land subsidence, crack development, soil collapse and formation of deep holes in the areas. ii) Soil Erosion: One of the major impacts of mining occurs on soil erosion. Mass deforestation and open-cast mining also contribute to soil erosion. As three major factors contributing to soil erosion, water erosion, wind erosion and human induced erosion, are occurring due to open pit mining and deforestation. iii) Impact on Forests: Mining will definitely reduce the forest cover of any state. The same is happening in Jharkahnd too. According to the Forest Survey of India's State of Forest Report, during an assessment published in 1997, Jharkhand...... center of map......ater.Adityapur Dam, Jamshedpur 15 feet 35 feet 20 feet less compared to the previous year Deep sea crisis. Tenughat Dam, Bokaro Only 33% of water is available compared to last year Extreme water crisis Maithan Dam, Dhanbad 140 meters 145 meters 5 meters less The situation is alarming Hiru Dam, Chatara 14 feet ---- ---- - The situation is alarming Kelaghagh Dam --- ---- ---- Sufficient water for additional water supply Konara Dam ---- --- --- The situation is alarming Panchait Hill Dam ---- --- --- The situation is alarming alarming Tilaiya Dam --- --- --- Will supply water until April 10th. This is a big problem since rivers are the main source of drinking water. The status of major rivers of Jharkhand is given below:-
