The anal stage is the second psychosexual stage and occurs from eighteen months to three years. In this stage, the erogenous zone is the anus where a person can get a fixation by holding back or letting go while being toilet trained when in this stage. In this phase the conscious level that develops is the ego which is the reality principle present in all levels of the personality. The Ego is present to contain the impulses given by the ID and to express them in a more socially acceptable way. The ego gives delayed gratification instead of immediate gratification like the ID does. The tract that can be developed with an anal fixation is the anal retentive tract. When someone has anal retention they are stubborn, controlling, extremely clean and a perfectionist. These traits can be clearly seen in the “Democracy” and “Sandwich” clips. In democracy, as discussed above, Sheldon shows his controlling and perfectionist personalism when he orders the entire group to go on the train instead of the plane like the rest of the group wanted. At Sandwich he ordered a sandwich and got exactly what he wanted, but in the wrong order. They had put the cheese and lettuce in the wrong order, so he decides not to eat them.
