Every new day brings with it a new obstacle and new circumstances that we must learn to face and deal with. The variety of situations dictates the path they decide to follow to reach their destination. Sometimes the paths people decide to take will lead them down a terrible path that can put their lives at risk and cause them to lose what they love most. In the novel The Great Gatsby, writer F. Scott Fitzgerald provides examples of how a dream can be corrupted by a focus on acquiring wealth and power. Fitzgerald uses a character, Nick Carraway, to illustrate the sequence of events that make Jay Gatsby's life miserable through some of the poor choices he made to pursue his dream of winning back Daisy's love. Gatsby is a self-made man blinded by his motivation for luxury goods, wealth, and power through the love he had for Daisy. Since the scene of the book is set in the early 1920s, the demand for Gatsby to achieve his goal was absolutely necessary. Daisy came from a powerful and wealthy family, and during the 1920s it was okay for wealthy families to stick together and poor families to stay together. The Great Gatsby provides examples of series of events that can be explained by Lauren Slater's chapter “In the Unlikely Event of a Water Landing: Darley and Latane's Training Manual- A Five Stage Approach” from her book Opening Skinner's Box and the book by Charles Duhigg The Power of Habit. The three readings have similarities in the actions explained which are questionable as to how people may change due to the different types of environments they face and how their attitude towards conflict will vary depending on how they intend to act towards it. The Great Gatsby is a novel told through... the medium of paper... it is loved. Although this bad habit cannot be forgotten, it can be restructured by transforming the routine into something that does not harm his relationship. The reason why Tom cheats on his wife is because he really doesn't like her, but ironically he is jealous when Daisy starts to leave the house suspiciously to visit Gatsby. Finally, Gatsby is a very attractive character because he has a lot of style and is driven by the dream of becoming upper class, becoming a millionaire and having an extraordinary lifestyle, but he fails to get Daisy and dies trying to get her back. Gatsby's problem is that it's not enough for him to be rich now he doesn't care about parties or lifestyle. He needs to go back to the past and start a life with Daisy when they were both innocent, that was the time he needed to become a rich guy but he can't change the past.
