Not all people in the universe possess unswerving courage, or compassion, or diligence, but a hero does. He possesses all the sincere loyalty and sacrifice that any ordinary man could never acquire, along with the selfless devotion and fortitude that comes with it. Those who possess these respectable traits should be considered heroes, but those who lack them should not. Similarly, in the epic poem The Odyssey written by Homer, the Greek leader Odysseus fails to meet the standards of a hero by not being able to understand the proper qualities. Odysseus' traits of lack of leadership, arrogance, and disloyalty solidify him as not deserving the title of hero. Causing the numerous failures he has on his journey, Odysseus' ineffective leadership proves that he is not worthy of being a hero. His lack of control is evident in several instances, one of which is when his men devour and slaughter livestock on Thrinakia. Although Zeus scolds the crew and Odysseus for their illegal act, it is essentially Odysseus' mistake that allows these events to happen. Odysseus contains the knowledge that his crew is not primarily composed of the most loyal and faithful men, and judging by their previous actions, they are not always known for respecting their leader's commands. Knowing this, Odysseus should have expressed concern and initiative to ensure that his companions do what he advises, and engaging in a pleasant activity such as sleeping portrays none of that. Based on reasonable past events, a true hero would map the possibilities of what could happen in the future and stay awake, willingly taking care of his men to prevent such events from occurring. This not only demonstrates inadequate leadership, but a critical failure in...... half of the document ......ro. Once again, Odysseus fails to live up to the expectations of a hero with his infidelity towards Penelope and his frequent affairs with other women. he cannot be seen as a hero. From being unable to curb his revenge to "killing" the entire crew, his middle man persona is clearly visible from start to finish. The incompetent leadership he portrays and the adultery he commits cannot be ignored in evaluating him as a hero. By far, being considered a hero is not an easy task to achieve, but there are heroes out there who rightly deserve this title. In conclusion, whether a person's desire is to become a hero or he already has the title, either way, he has one main purpose: to change the world for the better..
